Amazon announced that it has achieved 100% recyclable delivery packaging in Europe. Customers can now expect to receive their packages in flexible paper bags, cardboard envelopes, and corrugated cardboard boxes, all of which are easily recyclable through household recycling systems across Europe. The company, including its third-party sellers using Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA), ensures that all delivery packaging components, such as boxes, bags, and envelopes necessary for transporting products to customers, are now recyclable.
Over the past year, Amazon has significantly increased the number of products shipped without any extra packaging by over 50% in Europe. This dual approach has enabled the company to estimate that it has avoided using more than one billion single-use plastic delivery bags in its European distribution network since 2019.
In addition to collaborating with vendors to enhance the use of original packaging made from recyclable cardboard and paper, Amazon is taking steps to minimize waste and carbon emissions by using lighter, appropriately sized packaging when necessary. This effort is aimed at ensuring the safe arrival of products while reducing environmental impact.
As part of its goal to become a sustainability leader, the company is a co-founder and the inaugural signatory of The Climate Pledge, a commitment to achieving net-zero carbon by 2040. In line with this objective, Amazon is progressing toward using 100% renewable energy across its operations by 2025 and has incorporated over 9,000 electric delivery vehicles into its global delivery fleet.
