The Maersk ECO Delivery initiative is dedicated to reducing global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with ocean shipping by using certified low-emission fuel as a greener alternative to traditional fossil fuels.

In a partnership between A.P. Moller – Maersk and Amazon, they have recently finalized an agreement for the transportation of 20,000 FFE (Forty-foot Equivalent) containers in 2023-2024. This transportation will utilize green biofuel as part of Maersk’s “ECO Delivery” ocean product offering. Maersk anticipates that this move will lead to a reduction of 44,600 metric tons of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) compared to standard bunker fuel, which is roughly equivalent to the emissions from burning 50 million pounds of coal. Remarkably, this marks the fourth consecutive year that Amazon and Maersk have collaborated to use low GHG fuel options for container shipping.

The ECO Delivery biofuel option delivers immediate and externally verified GHG savings for customers, eliminating the need for compensatory measures like offsetting. This year, Amazon will benefit from an added feature of the ECO Delivery product, which involves the use of green methanol alongside biodiesel as a second environmentally friendly fuel in the vessel fleet.

Additionally, this new model provides price predictability and stability, detached from the volatile fossil fuel market.

Both Maersk and Amazon are united in their objective to achieve net-zero GHG emissions by the year 2040. This partnership signifies a significant stride toward realizing this goal and underscores the commitment of both companies to decarbonize ocean shipping.
