BEUC report uncovers greenwashing labels are becoming more common on supermarket shelves

More and more brands claim their product is climate-neutral and thus good for the environment.

According to the European Consumer Organisation, Europe’s leading consumer NGOs and food and drink producers are greenwashing their products by labelling them as CO2 neutral (BEUC).

“It is scientifically incorrect to label a product as 100% CO2 neutral. Consumers in the supermarket have no way of verifying such claim, BEUC senior food policy officer Emma Calvert told the media”. Calvert stated, “these companies use carbon offsets. So they are emitting carbon right now, and the pledges are mostly for future tree planting projects.”
