Microsoft Partners with Aker Carbon Capture, CO280 to Scale-up Carbon Removal Market in US and Canada

Microsoft, Aker Carbon Capture, and CO280 have joined forces to boost the carbon removal market across its entire spectrum, from project development to digital tracking and reporting.

While there are various methods available for capturing and storing CO2, most are still in early stages and lack scalability. Additionally, the quality and verification of carbon offsetting projects face challenges, making it difficult for participants to discern between high and low-quality initiatives.

Aker Carbon Capture specializes in proprietary technology to capture CO2 emissions from industrial plants, while CO280 focuses on biomass carbon removal and storage projects in the pulp and paper industry. Together with Microsoft, they plan to explore carbon capture projects in North America, develop screening processes for carbon capture feasibility, standardize measurement and reporting systems, and create digital tools to assess project quality against Microsoft’s criteria for high-quality carbon removal.

Furthermore, the partnership aims to advocate for policies and demonstrate leadership to promote carbon capture in the pulp and paper industry, including the use of high-integrity carbon removals.

This collaboration is part of Microsoft’s broader initiative to support the carbon removal market and achieve carbon negativity by 2030. Microsoft aims to create a robust market for carbon dioxide removals by establishing a digital value chain for tracking carbon attributes and generating reliable credits.
