Decarbonization choices are becoming a pivotal factor in the selection of logistics partners for clients like Novo Nordisk, a life-science company. Possibilities for reducing carbon emissions, such as DHL’s GoGreen Plus service, are already viable solutions for transforming transportation. DHL Global Forwarding, an expert in air and ocean freight under the DHL Group, is observing a rising demand for eco-friendly transport alternatives that rely on sustainable fuels, including Sustainable Aviation Fuels. The trend is apparent both in tender processes and discussions with current clients. More and more shippers are not only asking for increased transparency regarding Greenhouse Gas Emissions but are also considering sustainable options, even if they involve added expenses.
DHL Global Forwarding’s GoGreen Plus service has enabled Novo Nordisk, a leader in diabetes care products, to initiate the decarbonization of its air freight shipments. This effort is projected to offset at least 30,000 tonnes of CO2e in 2023. However, due to the escalating demand, there is a pressing need to significantly expand the availability of sustainable fuels.
DHL provides its customers with the opportunity to lower their transportation emissions through the GoGreen Plus service. In this setup, carriers utilize sustainable biofuels on behalf of DHL. The resulting reduction in emissions is credited to DHL and then attributed to the shippers.
Consequently, DHL Global Forwarding is testing a novel Greenhouse Gas Emissions Accounting Framework developed in conjunction with the Smart Freight Centre and other collaborators. The concept behind this framework is to dissociate the accounting of environmental attributes of sustainable fuels from their physical distribution, thereby connecting the environmental benefits of these fuels to specific customers.
The framework aims to ensure environmental credibility and alignment with established industry standards while simultaneously offering companies a pragmatic accounting structure as an initial step towards a broader industry norm. Access to the GoGreen Plus service is straightforward, for instance, through DHL Global Forwarding’s digital customer platform called myDHLi.
