SUMMARY:Tackling the electricity crisis in Europe: emergency intervention or a full revamp?
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\n\n\n\nThe energy sector has experienced turmoil in the past two years. Covid-19 lockdowns sharply reduced energy demand\, causing prices to drop. Then the post-pandemic economic rebound increased demand amid supply shortages\, resulting in price hikes. In the last year\, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has created further uncertainty in the European policy landscape and energy markets\, with supply disruptions of natural gas leading to record-high electricity prices. \n\n\n\nIn this insight hour\, join us to consider how best to tackle the energy crisis in Europe. Would a reduction in usage of natural gas\, and power overall\, be enough to mitigate supply-side tensions and help avoid scarcity during winter months? Is that reduction even achievable? Given all the factors at play\, what now needs to happen to support Europe in reaching its long-term climate objectives? What can be done to hasten the energy transition\, reduce European dependency in the areas of energy and raw materials\, and improve energy security for national economies? \n\n\n\nThis Insight Hour is programmed by Economist Impact and hosted by Deloitte. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nSee you tomorrow at the @EconomistEvents webinar on how best to tackle the electricity ⚡️ crisis in Europe. Many of the #cleanenergy solutions are available but we also need to make the timelines for phasing out fossil fuels more explicit.Register👉 https://t.co/dV7VcBbZz6 pic.twitter.com/6EtPA2HGMu — María Mendiluce (@mendiluce) March 22\, 2023

SUMMARY:US Climate Action Summit 2023
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\n\n\nWhat is the US Climate Action Summit?\n\n\n\nBack for its third year\, the US Climate Action Summit unites key leaders in business\, politics and advocacy to drive US climate momentum during Earth Week. \nWe’re hosting an intimate yet innovative program that favours participation\, progress and accountability. \nOur goal for the US Climate Action Summit is to create a participant-led platform that drives measurable outcomes on climate policy and business action\, with attendees at the heart of the agenda. \n\n \nHow is this event different?\n\n\n\nWe know events alone will not change the world. But the people and conversations at them can. We need a little less conversation and a lot more action at events like this. \nWe’ve seen a huge demand from our business\, policy and NGO networks for an open and honest platform that pushes progress and implementation. \nSo we’ve designed an agenda that puts participation at the center of the program by creating an open space for off the record conversations\, carefully curated small-group conversations\, and a series of closed-door implementation sessions that deliver real outcomes.

SUMMARY:How Can The Built Environment Drive Social and Environmental Value?
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis webinar\, organised by the Financial Times in partnership with JLL\, will delve into the rising importance of social value in the development of a net-zero\, healthy\, and equitable built environment. It will look at the key challenges and tensions between short and long term priorities and how the ecosystem of stakeholders can align and engage in the creation of spaces that are safe\, inclusive\, resilient and sustainable. Our experts will share practical experiences and discuss ways to achieve decarbonisation goals alongside social and financial targets\, explore opportunities for shared value and stakeholder collaboration\, and examine how to improve the human value proposition throughout the entire real estate cycle. \nSocial value is a core part of ESG\, yet there is a gap between ambition and action. Companies typically take a fragmented approach and focus more on the ‘E’ – rather than addressing environmental and social goals in tandem. Those who take a holistic approach across the real estate cycle\, can transform the built environment into a driver of positive change\, for both people and planet\, while accelerating progress and unlocking competitive advantage.

SUMMARY:4th global conference of the Sustainable Food Systems Programme
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\n\n\n\n\nHumankind is confronted with multiple deeply rooted and interlinked crises\, including in relation to climate\, biodiversity\, conflict\, energy\, consumer prices\, food insecurity\, malnutrition and health. \nGlobal food systems challenges call for a profound and swift transformation of how we produce\, process\, retail\, and consume food and dispose organic waste. \nThe UN Secretary-General’s Food Systems Summit (UN FSS) in September 2021 created important momentum for this transformation. \nContributing to the 2023 Stock-Taking Moment of the UN FSS follow-up process\, this conference will look at how food systems need to be transformed to overcome these crises in order to minimize the risk of global collapse and achieve the SDGs. \nBased on concrete examples\, the conference will look at main barriers and bottlenecks in relation to food systems transformation\, discuss solutions and release a series of actionable recommendations with a focus on the following five key levers: \n\nGlobal\, regional\, national\, sub-national inclusive governance to set the foundations for applying a holistic/integrated approach towards sustainable food systems.\nCollaborative\, multisectoral\, integrated policy actions based on a holistic approach to materialize the transformation we need: shifting consumption and production patterns in our food systems.\nMobilizing means of implementation\, including financing.\nMetrics and accountability frameworks to measure transformation.\nMission-oriented research and innovation\, in collaboration with the private sector.\n\nTo do so\, the conference will provide a space for countries\, coalitions\, the Food Systems Coordination Hub’s “ecosystem of support” and other food systems actors to present transformational actions\, tools and initiatives linked to the implementation of National Pathways for Food Systems Transformation that have emerged since the UN FSS and discuss how such actions can be further scaled up to ensure that we collectively attain our sustainable food systems pathways by 2030. \nIn addition\, the conference will discuss how progress on shaping sustainable\, resilient\, healthy and inclusive food systems in the context of the UN FSS follow-up process can be properly measured in view of the UN FSS 2023 Stock-Taking Moment and beyond.

SUMMARY:Capital for Climate Action Conference
DESCRIPTION:Clarity in the low-carbon transition\nOwners and managers of assets\, financial institutions and companies are committing to climate action amid a rapidly changing economic landscape. A banking crisis\, war in Ukraine\, trade tensions\, tightening monetary policy and the increasing urgency to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions are driving the need for clarity on navigating the path to net-zero alignment. The immensity of the challenge is matched only by the necessary pace of the transition. \nTogether we will untangle the complexity of this rapidly evolving environment that is reshaping investment and business strategies\, addressing issues such as: \n\nNavigating an economic environment that can clash with climate ambition\nIdentifying and rewarding companies that are actually decarbonizing\nEvaluating opportunities in green technologies and sustainable finance\nQuantifying the impact of physical climate risks on the pricing of financial assets\nAnticipating where regulation and reporting might go next\nBringing integrity to climate commitments\n\nParticipants will leave with greater clarity about the climate transition\, together with practical guidance for making critical decisions and taking action to address the risks and opportunities that accompany today’s challenges.

SUMMARY:ESG Portfolio Management: Optimizing Opportunities & Performance
DESCRIPTION:More investment portfolio managers are becoming increasingly aware of the significant impact ESG factors can have on a company’s long-term financial performance. They acknowledge that companies with robust ESG practices are better equipped to handle risks and seize opportunities\, whereas those with weaker ESG practices may face reputational and regulatory risks\, ultimately affecting their financial performance. \nInstitutional investors are also facing mounting pressure from stakeholders to take ESG factors into account when making investment decisions. Consequently\, measuring and managing companies’ ESG practices and performance has become a crucial aspect of portfolio managers’ fiduciary responsibilities. Nevertheless\, the implementation of this strategy presents substantial challenges\, such as aligning ESG priorities\, dealing with laborious manual data collection processes\, and lacking sufficient analytics and insights into ESG performance. \nThe audience is invited to attend a webinar hosted by Archer and BPM\, where they can gain valuable insights into the current developments\, obstacles\, and potential benefits of ESG portfolio management. The webinar will cover the best approach for portfolio management companies to establish and maintain a sustainable ESG program\, as well as how Archer can enhance ESG performance management and reporting practices to optimize management decision-making.

SUMMARY:Closing the loop: Nutrient recovery from Wastewater
DESCRIPTION:Wastewater\, a severe source of pollution faced by many countries globally\, enters our environment in large quantities and affects the health of humans and ecosystems alike. This also has a major impact on socio-economic activities. Water is a finite resource and the demand from a rapidly growing population puts additional stress on our freshwater bodies and agricultural practices; and sustainable wastewater management shows great promise to fulfil this growing demand. \nHalf of the world’s food security is dependent on nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer use. Often an excessive application of these fertilizers ends up in our water bodies as agricultural run-off\, generating wastewater rich in nutrients. When this wastewater pollutes freshwater and marine ecosystems\, it can lead to loss of aquatic biodiversity caused by eutrophication and the creation of dead zones. The recovery and reuse of nutrients from wastewater could offset 13.4% of the global demand from fertilizers\, hence addressing the social\, environmental\, and economic costs from wastewater. \nThis webinar\, jointly organised by the Global Wastewater Initiative (GWWI) and the Global Partnership on Nutrients Management (GPNM)\, taking place on 16 August 2023\, 3:30 PM – 5:00 PM Nairobi time\, aims to discuss the potential of treating wastewater to recover\, recycle\, and reuse nutrients\, with a focus on nitrogen and phosphorus\, and showcases examples and case studies from the work done in this area.

SUMMARY:ESG: Dispatch from the Front Lines of Accountable Capitalism
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\n\nOver the past decade\, environmental\, social\, and governance (ESG) factors have captured the attention of trillions of dollars of capital\, engaged thousands of consultants\, and become a top strategic concern in the C-suite and board rooms. However\, over the past 18 months\, a countermovement has challenged the efforts to value ESG factors and incorporate them into strategic initiatives\, claiming that such efforts are “woke” and antithetical to free markets. This countermovement has culminated in seven separate Congressional hearings in Washington\, DC in July 2023\, challenging various aspects of ESG integration. Yet\, at the same time\, EU ESG disclosure regulation continues to expand and investor and corporate interest in ESG factors remains strong. \nIn this LinkedIn Live Session\, three leaders in ESG integration – across financial services\, consulting\, and corporate – will join Wharton professors to discuss their perspectives on the current battle of ideas\, dollars\, and action. Join us to learn the latest actionable insights from the front lines of accountable capitalism.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Biodiversity - linking the TNFD to your business strategy
DESCRIPTION:In response to the impending crisis of biodiversity loss\, businesses and organizations are facing a pressing demand for proactive measures and streamlined practices. The newly introduced TNFD (Task Force on Nature-related Financial Disclosures) framework presents a methodical approach for companies to evaluate and communicate their impact on biodiversity. This is pivotal not only for the success of their individual sustainability strategies but also for the attainment of global objectives and the establishment of transparency for stakeholders. \nOur upcoming webinar endeavors to provide you with valuable insights into the critical aspects of biodiversity loss\, sparking a discourse on the integration of nature and business within corporate strategies\, both in theory and practice. Central to the discussion is the TNFD framework and how it serves as a tool to comprehend\, harmonize\, and report on a company’s influence on biodiversity. \nOrlaith Delargy\, an Associate Director at KPMG Ireland\, boasts seven years of professional expertise. Her prior engagements with CDP\, Natural Capital Ireland\, SustainabilityWorks\, and the Dublin Chamber of Commerce have nurtured her proficiency across various sustainability domains\, including water security\, biodiversity\, climate mitigation\, and adaptation. During this webinar\, Orlaith will elucidate the driving forces behind proactive measures and the actionable steps businesses can undertake. \nFurthermore\, while the new TNFD framework might be on the radar of many\, there could still be lingering uncertainties about its components – what it entails and how companies can practically leverage it. Marianne Haahr\, representing Global Canopy and TNFD\, will delve into the intricate elements of the framework. She will unravel its composition\, capabilities\, as well as its limitations. This presentation promises to provide insights into how companies\, akin to yours\, are currently engaging with biodiversity and how this engagement will evolve in the foreseeable future. \nThe key takeaways from this webinar include: \n1. Understanding Biodiversity: Grasping the essence of biodiversity and its significance for both you and your organization. \n2. Practical Implementation: Learning how to effectively incorporate biodiversity considerations into practical operations. \n3. TNFD Framework Introduction: Gaining an introductory understanding of the TNFD framework and its implications for your organization. \nThis webinar is tailored for management professionals who are currently or prospectively involved in integrating biodiversity considerations into the ESG (Environmental\, Social\, and Governance) or overarching strategies of their organizations. If you’re interested in comprehending the strategic benefits that the TNFD framework can offer in a systematic manner\, this session is designed to provide you with valuable insights.

SUMMARY:MSCI in practice: Managing your portfolio's carbon footprint and understanding the impact of changing market conditions
DESCRIPTION:In order to comprehend and gauge the carbon footprint of a portfolio as well as its fluctuations over time\, a fundamental underpinning is established. This foundation serves as the basis for regulatory reporting\, engagement with stakeholders\, evaluations of climate-related risks\, and the formulation of climate strategies and initiatives. \nAlterations in the carbon footprints of portfolios can stem from a variety of sources. These include shifts in climate-related variables\, adjustments made to the portfolio’s balance\, or changes in financial variables. \nThis upcoming event will center around an illuminating conversation about a framework for attributing the carbon footprint. This framework serves to allocate alterations in emissions at the portfolio level to their core drivers. These encompass transformations in the portfolio’s composition\, shifts in emissions from the entities within the portfolio\, and alterations in the structure of ownership and financing. The purpose of this framework is to empower investors with insights into the extent to which modifications in a portfolio’s carbon footprint can be attributed to the inherent decarbonization initiatives of companies\, the investment choices of portfolio managers\, or shifts in the financing landscape of these companies. \nFurthermore\, the event will present an investor’s perspective\, emphasizing the indispensability and significance of attributing carbon footprints. This perspective will shed light on why understanding the sources behind changes in carbon footprints is not just a choice\, but an imperative in the current landscape.

It is the only risk event that convenes the whole market in one place: from institutional investors to financial services\, as well as companies and solution providers. There is a need for collaboration among these groups so that investors and financial stakeholders can review a company’s ESG and climate disclosures and understand the risks and impacts. \n\nThe event will take place in a hybrid format on September 12th-14th 2023\, in-person and virtually. We will be hosting an in-person day at Hilton Bankside\, London\, UK.

SUMMARY:Climate Week NYC
DESCRIPTION:Climate Week NYC stands as the premier annual event in the realm of climate action\, uniting around 400 events and activities within the expanse of New York City. Through a blend of physical\, hybrid\, and digital formats\, this weeklong gathering draws together a diverse array of participants. This assembly includes business magnates\, political trailblazers\, community leaders\, and representatives from civil society worldwide\, representing varied ages and backgrounds. Their common purpose is to propel the transition towards a sustainable future\, expedite the pace of progress\, and champion the ongoing transformations. \nPlaying host to this impactful gathering is the Climate Group\, a global nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating climate action. The week’s official program\, orchestrated by the Climate Group\, serves as a nexus for prominent figures spanning business\, government\, civil society\, and the climate sector on an international scale. \nThis year’s iteration of Climate Week NYC is slated for September 17-24\, 2023. Orchestrated in partnership with the United Nations General Assembly\, the event occurs in coordination with the United Nations and the City of New York. \nThe event’s core activities encompass an extensive range of nearly 400 events and activities held throughout New York City. These proceedings will be accessible through various channels\, with key sessions streamed online for remote participation. The lineup includes entirely digital events incorporated into the program. \nA pivotal moment within the week is the Climate Week NYC Opening Ceremony\, scheduled for September 17. This ceremony commands considerable attention and features substantial announcements\, dialogues\, and conversations with global leaders hailing from business\, government\, and the climate community. Distinguished figures such as Prince Charles\, Tim Cook\, Jacinda Ardern\, Kristalina Georgieva\, and others have graced the stage in past editions. \nThe Opening Ceremony this year will grapple with three fundamental queries: \n1. How can investments be strategically directed\, and those with vested interests be held accountable\, given the urgency of climate action?\n2. While solutions to the climate crisis are available\, how can they be effectively implemented?\n3. What strides have been made\, and how can the collective determination of the climate community continue to drive meaningful climate action? \nSpanning September 18 and 19\, 2023\, the Climate Group hosts The Hub Live\, gathering over 1\,000 influential leaders from various sectors. This segment comprises sessions addressing key themes\, yet to be disclosed. \nThe theme “We Can. We Will” epitomizes the spirit of the event. It reflects a resolute commitment\, an unwavering focus\, a hopeful promise\, and a collective call to action. This theme encompasses both immediate action and a forward-looking perspective\, encompassing new prospects and initiatives. \nWhile promising strides have been witnessed in domains like renewables and financing\, the event underscores the necessity to persistently advance. The upcoming phase mandates a thorough examination of the path forward: amplifying investments in sustainability\, pioneering novel solutions\, translating intentions into tangible actions\, exploring fresh opportunities\, and collectively dismantling barriers. \nForecasts anticipate that this year’s Climate Week NYC will surpass the impact of the transformative 2022 edition. Business leaders\, policy-makers\, community representatives\, and civil society advocates are poised to harness this week as a rallying point\, fostering substantial contributions to the pivotal goal of halving carbon emissions by 2030 and progressing toward a net-zero future by 2050.

SUMMARY:Ripple Effect: Exploring the Impact of Water Risk on Credit
DESCRIPTION:In a recent research report\, Moody’s highlighted that the impact of water management risks on credit is poised to increase significantly. This escalation arises from the dual pressures of escalating water demand and the compounding effects of climate change\, which particularly intensifies water scarcity in regions already under high water stress. The report identifies eight sectors collectively holding nearly $2 trillion in debt that are particularly susceptible to these risks. These risks extend beyond climate-related concerns and encompass a range of water-related issues such as accessibility\, availability\, efficiency\, pollution\, and pricing. \nAs the repercussions of insufficient water management practices become more pronounced in both financial and societal spheres\, comprehending the influence of these risks on corporations\, governments\, and other entities issuing debt is now of paramount importance. \nA panel consisting of Moody’s analysts and climate experts invites participation to delve into the subsequent focal points: \n1. Amplification of Water Supply-Demand Imbalances due to Climate Change: The panel will discuss the exacerbating effects of climate change on the existing imbalances between water supply and demand. \n2. Translation of Water Management Issues into Credit Risks: The discussion will explore how the challenges associated with water management can be transformed into credit risks for entities that issue debt. \n3. Constructing Resilience: Government and Corporate Strategies: Participants will have the opportunity to explore potential measures that governments and companies can adopt to enhance their resilience in the face of these challenges.

DESCRIPTION:Join ERM and the SustainAbility Institute for a discussion about the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). \n\n\n\n\nThe CSRD is the most far-reaching piece of legislation on ESG disclosure and raises many questions: Which companies will the Directive apply to and when? How will it impact the companies with subsidiaries in Europe? What steps should companies take to prepare for its implementation? The webinar will discuss these questions and more through discussion with ERM’s subject matter experts and panelists from German chemicals company BASF and British software company Sage. Panelists and experts will expand on expected updates to the CSRD\, the importance of double materiality\, and share ERM’s recommended four-step process for CSRD alignment.
