Maersk signs landmark green methanol offtake agreement to drive fleet decarbonization

The agreement for the supply of green methanol between A.P. Moller – Maersk and the Chinese clean energy giant Goldwind extends into the next decade, representing a significant milestone as the first major green methanol supply arrangement for the global shipping industry. A.P. Moller – Maersk has set a target to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 across its operations, and this deal plays a crucial role in mitigating the early risks associated with the company’s journey toward net-zero emissions. It also aligns with the anticipation of a competitive green methanol market by 2030.

The substantial volumes agreed upon have the potential to fuel more than half of Maersk’s methanol-enabled capacity currently on order each year. These volumes consist of a blend of green bio-methanol and e-methanol, both produced using wind energy at a new facility in Hinggan League, Northeast China, situated approximately 1000km northeast of Beijing. Production at this facility is scheduled to commence in 2026. With the signing of this offtake agreement, Goldwind anticipates finalizing the investment decision for the facility by the year’s end.

In line with its commitment to sustainability, A.P. Moller – Maersk is on track to receive its first large ocean-going methanol-powered vessel (16,000 TEU) in the first quarter of 2024. The company is actively collaborating with various global partners to secure solutions for the entire vessel series scheduled for delivery in 2024-25.
