Deutsche Post DHL Group has launched its GoGreen Plus service for its international courier division DHL Express, allowing customers to address Scope 3 emissions from shipping using sustainable aviation fuel.
DHL’s GoGreen service offers shippers the option of carbon-neutral shipping by investing in internationally recognised climate protection projects to offset emissions generated during transportation. GoGreen Plus aims to provide real emissions reductions through carbon “insetting,” allowing shippers to replace traditional fossil fuels with sustainable fuels or clean technologies like SAF.
The new service will be available to all DHL Express customers worldwide in the coming months, beginning with the United Kingdom. Customers will be able to tailor the emissions reductions they want to achieve, as well as the amount of SAF they use, under the new programme.
Scaling up the use of sustainable aviation fuels is a key component of DHL’s Sustainability Roadmap. The roadmap, which will be launched in 2021, includes a series of decarbonisation and environmental sustainability commitments, including implementing more ambitious climate targets and linking executive compensation to ESG goals. DHL plans to use at least 30% SAF blending in all air transport by 2030.
DHL Express announced last year that it had signed two of the largest-ever sustainable aviation fuel contracts, committing to purchase more than 800 million litres of SAF from suppliers bp and Neste over the next five years. SAF, supplied by bp and Neste, is made from waste oils and can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuel.
