FedEx, the global delivery company, has announced the introduction of FedEx Sustainability Insights, a new tool that grants shippers access to estimated carbon emissions data for their shipments at the package and account levels. This information is derived from network scan data.

According to FedEx, this tool enables customers to assess and manage the carbon impact of their shipping activities. It allows them to review their shipping history to gain insights into shipping patterns and environmental impact. Additionally, customers can generate customized reports that provide carbon footprint data to share with customers and stakeholders.

The tool has been developed by FedEx Dataworks, the company’s data-focused unit. It calculates greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions using the methodology outlined in the WRI’s Greenhouse Gas Protocol, incorporating industry-standard emission factors, operational metrics specific to utilities and transportation.

The data is presented in various metrics, including mode of transport, service type, and country or territory. This encompasses both domestic and global shipments for FedEx Express, FedEx Ground, and FedEx Freight.

FedEx also mentioned that this tool will serve as the basis for a new suite of tools for e-commerce customers. It includes an application programming interface (API) that allows customers to transfer emissions data to their internal systems. This feature enables customers to target eco-conscious consumers, provide information on the environmental impact of purchases, and generate emissions reports for stakeholders and regulatory organizations.

Furthermore, FedEx plans to leverage the data from this new tool to optimize its own operations and routes while working towards its climate goals. This includes the commitment to achieve carbon neutrality in operations by 2040.
