Toyota has revealed a new investment of nearly $8 billion to expand its Toyota Battery Manufacturing North Carolina (TBMNC) facility, which will result in the creation of around 3,000 jobs. This increases the total investment to approximately $13.9 billion and the number of jobs generated to over 5,000. This move aligns with Toyota’s comprehensive approach to advancing global vehicle electrification.

This investment will enhance the facility’s capacity to support both battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). They will be adding an additional eight BEV/PHEV battery production lines, bringing the total to ten, in addition to the four battery lines for Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) previously announced. The production increase will occur gradually, with line launches planned through 2030 to achieve an annual total production of more than 30 gigawatt-hours (GWh).

The expansion solidifies Toyota North Carolina as the primary hub for lithium-ion battery production in North America, boasting a substantial campus covering seven million square feet, which is equivalent to 121 football fields dedicated to battery production.

Toyota’s commitment to electrified vehicles is well-established, with over 24.6 million hybrid, plug-in hybrid, fuel cell, and battery electric vehicles on the road worldwide. The company aims to offer electrified options for every Toyota and Lexus model globally by 2025.

“Through the last few years of building relationships, including my most recent trip to Tokyo and meeting with President Sato, our partnership with Toyota has become stronger than ever, culminating in this historic announcement,” said North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper. “North Carolina’s transition to a clean energy economy is bringing better paying jobs that will support our families and communities for decades to come.”
