New partnership to deliver ESG-aligned environmental services rooted in Indigenous knowledge and local engagement. ESG BROADCAST shares key takeaways.

ERM Consultants Canada Ltd., a subsidiary of the world’s largest specialist sustainability consultancy, has announced the establishment of a majority equity joint venture with Ka∙kin Group Ltd., the economic development arm of the Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi’it community in southeastern British Columbia. The newly formed entity, Ka∙kin Environmental Consultants (KEC), will deliver region-specific environmental solutions informed by community priorities and traditional Indigenous knowledge systems.

The joint venture was officially announced on 14 July 2025, marking a strategic evolution in both organizations’ missions to advance responsible business practices, sustainability regulation adherence, and community-driven environmental outcomes. The partnership brings together ERM’s global technical and strategic sustainability expertise with Ka∙kin’s deep-rooted connection to the local community, aiming to fill a growing demand for inclusive, place-based environmental consulting services in the Elk Valley and surrounding regions.

“This partnership represents a significant step forward in developing sustainable solutions that honor the rich heritage of the people of Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi’it,” said Amit Sharma, North American Partner at ERM and Lead of the Joint Venture. “We envisage a future where economic development that benefits communities goes hand in hand with environmental stewardship as part of a just transition.”

John Pumphrey, CEO of Ka∙kin Group Ltd., emphasized the transformative nature of the collaboration. “This is about building pathways for local talent, fostering economic resilience, and ensuring that the benefits of development flow directly to Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi’it members,” he said. “Together with ERM, we’re shaping a future that reflects our values and our vision.”

Ka∙kin Environmental Consultants (KEC) will provide specialized services including water stewardship, biodiversity conservation, site closure, and regulatory permitting—areas that are increasingly central to climate policy updates and ESG compliance obligations for industry actors in the region. With professionals who live and work in the Elk Valley, the firm is uniquely positioned to deliver culturally responsive and technically robust outcomes that meet both regulatory requirements and community standards.

KEC’s model integrates capacity-building with environmental governance, reinforcing local self-determination and fostering shared environmental responsibility between private, public, and Indigenous stakeholders. The firm also prioritizes inclusive employment, skills training, and community consultation, ensuring that development aligns with sustainability principles and the long-term interests of the Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi’it Nation.

The establishment of KEC reflects a broader movement within Canada and globally to ensure that Indigenous communities are not only participants but also leaders in shaping environmental and economic futures. By creating a majority Indigenous-owned environmental consultancy with technical backing from a global ESG leader, the venture sets a precedent for effective co-governance and culturally grounded service delivery in the sustainability sector.

Strategic significance lies in the joint venture’s model of integrating Indigenous leadership with ESG-aligned technical consultancy, offering a replicable framework for inclusive environmental stewardship and compliance innovation. As regulatory demands grow and local engagement becomes a legal and ethical imperative, firms like KEC will be central to navigating the intersection of climate, equity, and economic development.

ESG BROADCAST will continue monitoring the updates related to this topic. Stay tuned to be updated on the related policy and pivotal regulatory shift.
