The Rainforest Alliance, a global non-profit focused on nature conservation and improving rural livelihoods, has partnered with Mirova, a sustainable investing affiliate of Natixis Investment Managers. This collaboration aims to enhance locally driven, nature-based solutions that benefit the climate, biodiversity, and local communities. Utilizing Mirova’s second investment strategy for sustainable land use, targeting €350 million, they plan to launch impactful investing initiatives in Africa, Latin America, and Asia.
The partnership intends to expand access to Rainforest Alliance certification and Mirova’s financial resources in these regions. This effort seeks to address the Nature-based Solutions financing gap, which needs to triple to $542 billion annually by 2030. The alliance will also advance the Rainforest Alliance’s goal of reaching 100 million farmers and workers by 2030, increasing the speed and scale of its impact.
Key Highlights:
- Collaborative Efforts: Starting with Mirova’s sustainable land use strategy, this partnership will identify investment opportunities that promote locally led, nature-based solutions such as regenerative agriculture and agroforestry, leveraging the Rainforest Alliance’s on-the-ground expertise.
- Shared Belief in Nature-Based Solutions: Regenerative agriculture improves soil health, carbon sequestration, and water retention, while agroforestry integrates trees into farming systems, enhancing biodiversity and providing additional income for farmers. These practices protect biodiversity and ecosystems, mitigate climate change, and bolster community resilience.
- Geographical Focus: Efforts will be concentrated on critical landscapes in Africa, Latin America, and Asia, where sustainable impact investment is urgently needed. Mirova will work directly with project holders to assess certification eligibility, while the Rainforest Alliance will promote Mirova’s financing solutions to farmers in its program.
The partnership is founded on a shared commitment to sustainability in food and agriculture, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience. With 35 years of experience, the Rainforest Alliance collaborates with farmers, citizens, companies, and investors to promote sustainable practices in over 60 countries. Mirova, a certified B-Corp, has financed more than 70 projects and companies focused on protecting and restoring nature in both emerging economies and developed markets.
