One of India’s largest renewable energy companies, ReNew Power, announced that it had signed a renewable energy agreement with Microsoft to supply the technology giant with 150 MW of renewable electricity.
The solar energy will be generated at a new site in Bikaner, about 450 kilometres from New Delhi. This is ReNew’s second large power purchase agreement with a US tech giant this year, following a 210 megawatt deal with Amazon in September.
Alphabet, Meta, and Apple, among other US tech companies, are increasingly desperate for clean energy options. For instance, these companies have some of the industry’s most aggressive net zero carbon emission targets. In addition, Microsoft has committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2030.
Deals like this one with Microsoft demonstrate that corporations worldwide, including India, are increasingly incorporating renewable energy into their operations in various forms. Moreover, this collaboration paves the way for innovative models to accelerate the energy transition.
