The UK and US have announced an initiative that will lead efforts to stabilise energy markets and intensify cooperation on energy efficiency, nuclear power, and renewable energy sources under the new “UK-US Energy Security and Affordability Partnership.” A new UK-US Joint Action Group, headed by senior officials from the UK Government and the White House, will direct the initiative.
The primary objective of the partnership is energy security as the group will work to ensure the market delivers sustained increases in the supply of Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) to UK terminals from the US and will collaborate on energy efficiency measures.
However, the partnership also ensures driving efforts to increase energy efficiency and support the transition to clean energy, expediting clean hydrogen development globally and promoting civil nuclear as safe energy use, as per the press release by UK Government.
Further, the partnership will promote foreign investment in clean energy technologies, including carbon capture and offshore wind. This will support the work being done by the US and the UK in conjunction with other G7 members to support the use of clean and sustainable energy in developing nations through the Just Energy Transition Partnerships.
The initiative will also pursue innovative energy solutions, including the decarbonisation of the aerospace sector, the creation of environmentally friendly aviation fuels, joint initiatives to develop electric vehicles, and Energy Smart Appliances.
