Chipotle Goes Green with New All-Electric, 100% Renewable Energy Powered Restaurant Design
Share on LinkedInShare on Twitter

Chipotle Mexican Grill has unveiled a new restaurant design that is entirely powered by renewable energy from wind and solar, achieved through the purchase of certified renewable energy credits.

The new design, which maximizes energy efficiency in equipment and systems, was piloted at two locations in Virginia and Florida, with a third opening later this year in Colorado. The restaurant design aligns with Chipotle’s commitment to reduce direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030, compared to 2019, as part of its Science Based Targets initiative.

As part of its ambitious goal to expand to 7,000 locations in North America, Chipotle plans to have over 100 new locations by 2024 equipped with all-electric equipment and other elements of the new design.

In addition, the company will continue to iterate on the design, incorporating operational feedback and insights. The new design includes various features such as rooftop solar panels, all-electric equipment and systems, heat pump water heaters, and energy management systems to manage heating, cooling, refrigeration, and other equipment.

The new design also includes the following:

  • Biodegradable service ware.
  • Cactus leather chairs.
  • Artwork made from recycled rice husks.
  • Electric vehicle charging stations at select locations.

Additionally, Chipotle is exploring other initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, such as standardizing the installation of energy management systems at every restaurant, using low-carbon fuels and renewable resources in logistics, investing in emission reductions in beef and dairy production, supporting regenerative agriculture practices among supply chain partners, and offering more vegetarian and vegan menu items. Furthermore, the company plans to increase its purchase of local produce to at least 36.4 million pounds in 2023.
