Nokia Commits to Net Zero Value Chain Emissions by 2040

Telecommunications and networking sector company Nokia broadcasted today a series of new climate goals, together with a new commitment to attain net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, both in its operations and around the value chain, by 2040.
The statement marks a noteworthy acceleration by Nokia of its long-term climate goal, carrying its net zero goals forward ten years from its 2050 goal.

In addition to its innovative 2040 goal, Nokia also proclaimed new promises to accelerate the decarbonization of its operations, with an innovative pledge to complete the decarbonization of its car swift and facilities, establishing part of its interim objective to lessen its greenhouse gas emissions by 50% across Scopes 1, 2, and 3, by 2030.

Scope 3, or value chain, releases account for the enormous majority of Nokia’s carbon footprint, with more than 95% of the corporation’s releases resulting from using its products. Nokia emphasized some of the levers in its net zero pathway to attaining its climate goals, with a main focus on enlightening the energy proficiency of its products and solutions.

Additional initiatives and targets being pursued by the corporation to accomplish its climate goals include a promise to practice 100% renewable energy in its facilities by 2025 working with its supply chain in its evolution to renewables, and an ambition to attain 95% circularity by 2030 about operative waste. The corporation also said it is inspecting credible solutions for carbon removals, noting that perpetual carbon removals and storage may be mandatory to neutralize some of its remaining emissions to reach net zero.

That drive will only accelerate, as Nokia introduces more energy-efficient resolutions in next-generation mobile, fixed, IP, and optical networks and in silicon, software, and systems. By binding to net zero by 2040 they build on their preceding climate goals as they look to create technology that assists the world act together.
