Avangrid, a subsidiary of Iberdrola based in the United States, has initiated the construction of the True North photovoltaic plant in Falls County, Texas, with a capacity of 240 MW. This plant is set to provide environmentally friendly and renewable energy to power the activities of Meta, the parent company of the widely-used social network Facebook, within the vicinity.
This endeavour aligns with Meta’s commitment to using 100% renewable energy to support its global operations, a practice adopted in 2020. The True North project is intended to cater to the energy needs of Meta’s upcoming data centre situated in Temple City, marking the company’s second data centre establishment in Texas.
Anticipated to achieve commercial operation in early 2025, True North represents Avangrid’s inaugural solar venture in Texas. Throughout its construction and operational phases, the project is projected to generate over 200 job opportunities. Moreover, it’s expected to contribute more than $40 million in property taxes over a span of 25 years to the state. Avangrid already manages a portfolio of over 1,250 MW in onshore wind facilities within Texas.
