The Japanese government will contribute 220 billion yen ($1.6 billion) from a green innovation fund to Australia’s attempts to create hydrogen for export from coal and biomass.
J-Power Latrobe Valley, a subsidiary of Japan’s Electric Power Development Co., and Sumitomo Corp. have participated in testing, including the transportation of the first liquid hydrogen shipment from southeast Australia to Kobe last year.
The Japan Suiso Energy joint venture plans to start production in the late 2020s, producing an initial 30,000 to 40,000 tonnes of clean hydrogen per year using carbon capture technology, the companies said in a statement on Tuesday. According to the partners, there is the possibility to increase output to as much as 225,000 tonnes.
