LEGO to Invest Over $1.4 Billion to Reduce Emissions, Commits to Net Zero by 2050

The LEGO Group has unveiled a series of commitments aimed at addressing climate concerns. These include a determination to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 and a plan to triple its investments in initiatives focused on environmental sustainability, raising the funding to more than $1.4 billion within the next three years.

The company further stated its intention to collaborate with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to formulate emissions reduction targets encompassing direct Scope 1 emissions stemming from its factories, offices, and stores, Scope 2 emissions originating from purchased energy, and Scope 3 emissions linked to its supply chain. The vast majority, approximately 98%, of the LEGO Group’s emissions footprint arises from its supply chain.

Extending beyond its prior commitment, which was approved by SBTi in 2020, to achieve a 37% reduction in emissions by 2032, the LEGO Group’s fresh net zero objective underscores its unwavering dedication to environmental responsibility.

The company has defined several pivotal domains for its forthcoming three-year investment strategy in environmental sustainability. These entail the development of carbon-neutral factories and structures, a scaling up of renewable energy production within its facilities, and the procurement of renewable energy for its factories, offices, and stores.

Within its supply chain, the LEGO Group intends to collaborate with suppliers via its “Engage-to-Reduce” program, established in 2014 with the collective aim of diminishing environmental impact.

In addition, the company aims to incorporate Shadow Carbon Pricing into significant investments, integrate a carbon Key Performance Indicator (KPI) into executive remuneration starting in 2024, and pursue responsible travel policies to curtail employee travel, particularly with regard to international air travel.

Niels B Christiansen, CEO of the LEGO Group said:

“Our immediate priority is to meet our 2032 carbon reduction targets and we’re making progress across a range of initiatives. This new, long-term goal will ensure that the decisions we make today will reduce our carbon footprint over the coming decades. It will also encourage future generations of LEGO employees, partners and suppliers to continue working with a sense of urgency to reduce the environmental impact of our business.”
