Science Based Targets initiative verifies Lenovo’s commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050
Share on LinkedInShare on Twitter

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) validated and approved Lenovo’s goal to reach net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050, making it the first PC and smartphone manufacturer and one of only 139 companies in the world with an SBTi-validated net-zero target, according to the press release.

Below are Lenovo’s long-term goals for 2050 and its near-term, SBTi-validated emissions reduction goals for 2030.

Overall Net-Zero Target

Lenovo is committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its value chain by 2049/50.

Near-Term Targets

Lenovo is committed to reducing absolute scope 1 and scope 2 GHG emissions by 50 per cent by FY2029/30, compared to FY2018/19. Lenovo also pledges to reduce scope 3 GHG emissions from selling products by an average of 35% for comparable products over the same period. In addition, Lenovo pledges to reduce scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services by 66.5% per million US dollars in gross profit over the same time frame. Lenovo additionally commits to reduce scope 3 GHG emissions from upstream transportation and distribution by 25% per tonne-km of transported product within the same timeframe.

Long-Term Targets

Lenovo has pledged to reduce absolute Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 GHG emissions by 90% by FY2049/50, compared to FY2018/19.

Reducing the environmental impact of its products, leveraging innovation to increase sustainability in its manufacturing, and decreasing emissions across its operations and value chain are Lenovo’s primary strategies for lowering its emissions. These strategies are outlined in the Journey to Net-Zero video series, demonstrating how Lenovo’s experts modify business processes to meet net-zero goals.

Under the Paris Agreement’s target of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, Lenovo’s emissions measurements will contribute to a larger body of collaborative data to understand and limit climate change. More than 4,000 businesses are aligning their emissions reduction objectives with SBTi’s science-based methodology and validation processes.

In addition to its efforts to reduce emissions, CDP has recognised Lenovo as a leader in Climate Change and Water Security and as one of Gartner’s Top 25 Global Supply Chain, Fortune’s World’s Most Admired Companies, and Fortune’s World’s Most Admired Companies. In its FY 2021-22 ESG Report, Lenovo details its efforts to create a smarter, more sustainable future for all.

“As a global technology leader, Lenovo has been committed to reducing its emissions for more than a decade,” said Lenovo Chairman Yuanqing Yang. “In the fight against climate change, we believe collaboration and accountability are the two critical elements needed for collective success. We remain dedicated to following climate science, standardizing our measurements, and seeking ongoing validation for our targets and progress.”
