European Energy Partners With Novo Nordisk and LEGO to Replace Fossil-Based Materials in Plastic Production

European Energy enters an agreement with Novo Nordisk and the LEGO Group to deliver e-methanol as a lower-carbon alternative to conventional plastic production.

The agreement will enable European Energy to produce e-methanol from renewable energy and biogenic CO2, which will be used as a substitute for fossil-based plastic in making medical devices such as insulin pens by Novo Nordisk and selected elements from the LEGO Group’s portfolio.

This move is significant as it represents a step towards reducing the use of fossil fuels in producing plastic, an integrated part of the modern world used in daily lives, industrial processes, and equipment. By engaging in this cooperation, Novo Nordisk and the LEGO Group are leading the way in developing sustainable materials and transitioning away from fossil fuels.

The e-methanol will be produced at European Energy’s e-methanol facilities in Kassø, Aabenraa, Denmark. The production of e-methanol will be based on renewable energy from wind and solar plants as well as biogenic CO2. The first batch is expected to be delivered in 2024, ensuring the delivery of e-methanol for part of the two Danish companies’ materials production from that year.

The agreement between European Energy, Novo Nordisk, and the LEGO Group is an exciting step towards developing sustainable materials and reducing the use of fossil fuels. Investing in technologies that support knowledge sharing and help accelerate progress across the industry, the three companies are leading the way in decarbonising plastic production. This project will encourage more partners to get involved in decarbonising plastic production and drive the decarbonisation of the business forward.
