Starbucks Commits Over $50 Million to Sustainable Waste and Water Funds

Starting January 3, 2024, Starbucks Coffee Company is allowing customers to utilize their own clean, personal cups for every visit. This initiative extends to all company-operated stores and participating licensed stores in the U.S. and Canada, including drive-thru services, the Starbucks app, and in-store cafe purchases.

Starbucks becomes the sole national coffeehouse in the U.S. to permit customers to use their personal cups when placing mobile orders. Additionally, Starbucks becomes the first in Canada to offer mobile orders for all drinks and sizes.

This achievement marks the realization of a goal set in 2022 to simplify the process for customers to opt for reusable cups, contributing to Starbucks’ commitment to reducing cup waste sent to landfills by 50% by 2030. As a significant majority of Starbucks beverages are consumed on-the-go, this milestone presents a substantial opportunity for customers to opt for reusables, aligning with Starbucks’ commitment to waste reduction. Over the past few years, the company has conducted more than 20 tests of reusable options in stores globally, with additional tests planned for the coming year.

Building off a successful personal cup test at 200 drive-thru stores across Colorado last spring, Starbucks store partners informed and helped co-design the custom reusable cup smallware all stores will now use to transfer orders to personal cups.
