Uber has unveiled a series of new sustainability commitments and initiatives for its Uber Eats platform, aiming to achieve emission-free deliveries by 2040 and eliminate unnecessary plastic waste by 2030. In European cities, the company has set an earlier goal of achieving an emissions-free Uber Eats platform by 2030. Uber had previously pledged to eliminate emissions in its mobility platform by 2040 and transition to 100% electric vehicles for rides in select regions by 2030.
Uber plans to achieve sustainable packaging milestones in Asia-Pacific and European cities as early as 2025. The company will support restaurants in all cities where Uber Eats operates in transitioning to more sustainable packaging through discounts, incentives, and advocacy by 2030.
To reach these sustainability goals, Uber will collaborate with the World Wildlife Fund and Closed Loop Partners to establish sustainable packaging guidelines. It will introduce features in the Uber Eats app allowing users to choose merchants that use environmentally friendly packaging. Uber will also partner with sustainable packaging providers to offer discounts on greener packaging solutions and join forces with Visa to assist restaurants in accessing financial support for sustainable packaging through their joint Grants for Growth program.
Regarding emissions, Uber will work with the organization RMI to scale programs helping couriers switch to greener modes of transport. It will expand micro-mobility partnerships to support couriers’ transition to electric bikes, electric vehicles, and other emission-free modes. The company will extend vehicle partnerships, including the Hertz Tesla rental program and cashback incentives for Pro Card users on charging in North America. Additionally, Uber plans to invest in optimizing delivery routes to minimize emissions through increased batching of orders and green routing.
