Tata Power Plans $5.6 Billion Investment for 7 GW Renewable Projects in Andhra Pradesh
Share on LinkedInShare on Twitter

Tata Power is considering a $5.63 billion investment to develop 7 GW of renewable energy capacity in Andhra Pradesh, India. If realized, this would be one of the state’s largest clean energy initiatives, incorporating solar, wind, and hybrid solutions, potentially with energy storage.

This move aligns with Tata Power’s broader goal of investing $9 billion in renewables over five years and supports India’s ambition to reach 500 GW of clean energy by 2030. Andhra Pradesh, aiming for over 160 GW of renewables, presents a massive investment opportunity worth up to ₹10 trillion.

However, India’s clean energy transition has faced roadblocks. The country missed its 175 GW renewable target for 2022, with issues like complex tenders and weak interstate transmission infrastructure slowing progress. Despite a record 73 GW in renewable tenders issued in 2024, about 8.5 GW went undersubscribed, signaling persistent challenges.

If successful, TPREL’s investment could not only bolster Andhra Pradesh’s leadership in green energy but also help India close critical gaps in its clean energy journey.
