India’s largest aluminium producer, Vedanta Aluminium, has launched the Vedamrit Jibika Farmer Producer Organization (FPO)—now recognized as Eastern India’s largest honey FPO. The initiative introduces the brand “Vedamrit – 100 per cent Pure Honey” and focuses on strengthening rural livelihoods while advancing sustainable agriculture and biodiversity conservation. The Vedamrit honey FPO initiative reflects a strategic corporate social responsibility programme that integrates economic empowerment with environmental sustainability.
The Vedamrit honey FPO initiative began with the distribution of honeybee boxes and capacity-building training for more than 500 farmers in Jharsuguda district of Odisha. Farmers received structured training in scientific beekeeping techniques and honey extraction methods through a bilingual training module in Odia and English. This capacity-building approach equips farmers with the technical knowledge required to improve productivity and ensure consistent quality of honey production.
Each honeybee box introduced through the Vedamrit honey FPO initiative is expected to generate an additional annual income of approximately ₹16,000 for participating farmers. The project diversifies income streams for rural households that traditionally rely on seasonal crops. By enabling supplementary income through beekeeping, the initiative reduces financial vulnerability and strengthens economic resilience among rural communities in the region.
Production targets further highlight the economic scale of the Vedamrit honey FPO initiative. The organisation aims to produce around 5,000 litres of premium honey by April 2026 and scale production to 20,000 litres annually in subsequent phases. At full scale, the programme is expected to generate approximately ₹1 crore in revenue. Vedanta Aluminium plans to expand the farmer base to more than 1,500 participants by FY2028, positioning the Vedamrit honey FPO initiative as one of the largest honey producer organisations in India.
Beyond income generation, the Vedamrit honey FPO initiative also supports ecological sustainability. Beekeeping plays a crucial role in crop pollination, which can increase agricultural productivity by up to 30 percent in some farming systems. By encouraging beekeeping practices among farmers, the initiative strengthens pollinator populations, enhances biodiversity, and supports climate-resilient agriculture. This integration of livelihood and environmental benefits highlights the ESG alignment of the programme.
The launch ceremony brought together regional policymakers and local administrative leaders, including the district collector and local legislators, reflecting strong institutional support for the programme. Through such partnerships, the Vedamrit honey FPO initiative seeks to create a sustainable rural enterprise model that combines corporate CSR, farmer entrepreneurship, and local governance collaboration.
Strategic significance lies in the Vedamrit honey FPO initiative’s ability to demonstrate how corporate ESG programmes can drive inclusive rural development while strengthening environmental resilience. The model integrates farmer capacity building, biodiversity conservation, and market access within a structured producer organisation. For businesses and policymakers, it offers a replicable framework for aligning corporate social investments with sustainable agriculture, rural income diversification, and long-term ecosystem health.
