All Nippon Airways (ANA) has taken a significant step toward achieving carbon neutrality by entering into a groundbreaking purchase agreement with 1PointFive, a leading carbon capture, utilization, and sequestration (CCUS) company headquartered in Houston, Texas.
Japan’s foremost airline, ANA, has emerged as the world’s first carrier to establish a purchase agreement for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits facilitated by Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology. This move underscores ANA’s unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability and carbon neutrality.
The purchase agreement is a vital component of ANA’s comprehensive climate transition strategy, aimed at achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Beyond operational and infrastructure enhancements and the adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel, ANA is taking the remarkable step of directly removing residual emissions through the acquisition of carbon removal credits.
Through this partnership, ANA will acquire 10,000 metric tonnes of CDR credits annually for three years, commencing in 2025. These credits will be generated by 1PointFive’s cutting-edge Direct Air Capture (DAC) plant, slated to become operational in Texas by mid-2025.
1PointFive employs Carbon Engineering’s DAC technology, designed to extract significant quantities of carbon dioxide (CO2) directly from the atmosphere. This innovative solution provides a pragmatic approach to addressing emissions from challenging sectors, such as aviation and transportation.
Mr. Shinichi Inoue, President and CEO of ANA, expressed the airline’s profound commitment to carbon neutrality and the potential positive impact of collaborating with 1PointFive. The partnership aligns with ANA’s broader mission to contribute to a carbon-neutral society.
Michael Avery, President of 1PointFive, commended Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology as a pivotal and scalable carbon removal solution critical for achieving global net-zero emissions. He expressed pride in 1PointFive’s role in supporting ANA’s pursuit of high-quality carbon removal credits.
1PointFive is dedicated to combating rising global temperatures and striving to achieve the ambitious goal of limiting temperature increase to 1.5°C by 2050. The company employs state-of-the-art technologies such as Direct Air Capture (DAC) and AIR TO FUELS™ alongside geologic sequestration hubs.
This collaboration between ANA and 1PointFive marks a pivotal moment in the aviation sector’s fight against climate change. As the first airline globally to commit to purchasing DAC-enabled carbon removal credits, ANA sets a precedent for the industry and reaffirms its position as a leader in environmental stewardship.
