Boeing has agreed to buy 5.6 million gallons (21.2 million litres) of blended sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from Neste, the world’s leading SAF producer, to support its commercial operations in the United States through 2023.
Boeing committed in 2021 to delivering commercial aeroplanes capable of and certified to fly on 100% SAF by 2030. According to the press release, these contracts exceeded the company’s SAF procurement from the previous year.
The purchase agreements include the supply of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation FuelTM, which is blended at a 30/70 ratio with conventional jet fuel to produce the blended SAF. Neste MY SAF is made from 100% renewable waste and residue raw materials such as cooking oil and animal fat waste, and it adheres to strict sustainability standards.
EPIC Fuels and Signature Aviation will supply 2.3 million gallons of this blended SAF, while Avfuel will supply 300,000 gallons for the Boeing ecoDemonstrator flight test programme and the company’s commercial sites in Washington state and South Carolina. Boeing is also purchasing 3 million gallons of the same blended SAF from EPIC Fuels and Signature Aviation, resulting in emissions reduction credits for commercial deliveries, Dreamlifter, and executive flights. These advantages result from a book-and-claim process that replaces petroleum jet fuel with SAF in fueling systems that are not part of the company’s fuel supply.
