Atlantic initiative FISATUR launches cross-border eco-tourism projects and training to boost environmental governance and responsible business. ESG BROADCAST shares key takeaways.
In a bid to revitalize struggling coastal communities along the Atlantic seaboard, the European Union is backing a transformative new initiative—FISATUR—designed to combine sustainable fishing tourism with maritime heritage preservation. Co-funded by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF), the 28-month project spans France, Spain, and Portugal and aims to create economic opportunity while tackling biodiversity loss and climate risks.
FISATUR addresses the decline of traditional fisheries by helping small-scale entrepreneurs develop tourism ventures that draw on the rich cultural and ecological value of coastal life. From Brittany to northern Portugal, the project is reimagining the blue economy with experience-based, low-carbon tourism designed to sustain both livelihoods and marine ecosystems.
Implemented in three key phases, the project began with comprehensive research involving over 300 participants across the region to identify existing gaps and map demand for maritime experiences. This fed into the FISATUR Incubation Programme, which selected 28 entrepreneurs across the three countries for tailored mentorship in sustainable business development, coastal resilience, and digital communication.
Between October 2024 and April 2025, these entrepreneurs piloted initiatives ranging from shellfish-gathering and traditional net-making workshops to VR-based marine education and eco-friendly angling. Two top projects from each country were selected for their innovation, community benefit, and environmental sensitivity.
The final phase, scheduled for 16–30 September 2025, will culminate in the FISATUR Trade Navigation Tour—a 13-day sailing mission connecting Brittany (France), Galicia (Spain), and Viana do Castelo (Portugal). During the journey, project leaders and stakeholders will engage in peer learning, thematic workshops, public outreach events, and site visits. The tour aims to consolidate the project’s impact while broadcasting its achievements through a media campaign and documentary.
FISATUR is closely aligned with the EU Green Deal and Blue Economy Strategy, promoting a shift from extractive practices to regenerative tourism. Its approach directly supports climate resilience, coastal employment diversification, and sustainable maritime governance in vulnerable Atlantic regions. Training components also help close critical skill gaps in business planning, sustainability compliance, and communication.
According to Cristina Fernández-González, Project Coordinator at FUNDAMAR, “FISATUR fosters diversification of maritime-fisheries jobs through tourism that promotes maritime heritage and community resilience. EMFAF funding plays a key role in developing sustainable blue economies across Atlantic coastal zones.”
Strategic significance lies in FISATUR’s model of linking cultural preservation with economic regeneration, offering a replicable roadmap for coastal resilience in Europe and beyond. For ESG professionals, the project demonstrates how environmental governance and responsible business practices can directly support vulnerable communities adapting to global change.
