Apple suppliers covering 95% of manufacturing spend commit to renewable energy

For Indian electronics manufacturers in Apple's supply chain, the commitment intensifies pressure to procure clean energy as a condition of retaining business.

Apple reported that over 320 suppliers, accounting for 95% of its direct manufacturing spending, have committed to using 100% renewable energy for Apple production by 2030, up from roughly 250 suppliers last year. Manufacturing emissions comprise nearly two-thirds of Apple's carbon footprint. Since Apple called on suppliers in October 2022 to decarbonise their Apple-related Scope 1 and 2 footprint, clean energy use in the supply chain reached 16.5 GW, a 20% increase over last year, generating over 25.5 million MW and avoiding more than 18.5 million metric tons of carbon emissions.

Apple's direct manufacturing suppliers are directly affected, with progress toward 100% renewable energy now a key criterion for being awarded Apple business since October 2022. Suppliers across components and assembly must decarbonise their Apple-related Scope 1 and 2 emissions. Beyond manufacturing, Apple is addressing product-use emissions, which account for 24% of its footprint, by matching device-charging electricity with clean electricity by 2030 through solar projects in Michigan, Spain, Australia, and Texas. Suppliers in Apple's water-stressed manufacturing regions are also affected by its Supplier Clean Water program.

Suppliers should accelerate procurement of renewable energy to meet the 2030 100% renewable commitment, recognising that progress is now a criterion for awarding Apple business. They should track clean energy capacity additions, given the supply chain reached 16.5 GW. Suppliers in water-stressed regions should engage with Apple's Supplier Clean Water program, which has saved 76 billion gallons since 2013, including 12 billion gallons last year. Manufacturers should monitor Apple's broader 2030 carbon-neutrality and freshwater replenishment goals, which will shape future supplier expectations and contractual requirements.
