India currently has less than 1 GWh of commissioned battery storage, while 10,658 MW of BESS is under construction and another 22,347 MW is at the tendering stage.
Despite strong pipeline activity, deployment faces structural challenges including high upfront capital costs, China-dependent supply chains for lithium-ion cells (which account for approximately 55 per cent of system costs), transmission constraints and the absence of dedicated long-term financing products. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi confirmed that production-linked incentive schemes are supporting domestic battery cell manufacturing, with at least 44 GW expected through these initiatives. New tenders are increasingly requiring firm and dispatchable renewable energy combining solar, wind and storage so electricity can be supplied on demand.
