AWS Signs Wind Power Purchase Agreement in Tamil Nadu with Malaysia's Gentari

Amazon Web Services and Malaysian clean energy company Gentari have signed a Power Purchase Agreement supporting an 80 MW wind project in Tamil Nadu, India, expected to begin operations in mid-2027. The project will generate approximately 300,000 MWh of renewable energy annually and forms part of AWS's $12 billion India cloud infrastructure investment plan.

The Tamil Nadu wind project expands AWS's renewable energy portfolio in India at a time of rapid growth in hyperscale data centre capacity across the country. AWS announced in 2023 plans to invest more than $12 billion in Indian cloud infrastructure by 2030 to meet surging demand for cloud services. Amazon, the world's largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy globally, achieved its goal of powering global operations with 100% renewable energy in 2024 — seven years ahead of its original 2030 target.

Gentari, launched in 2022 by Malaysian integrated oil and gas company Petronas, targets clean energy solutions across renewable energy, hydrogen, and green mobility. The company signed a collaboration agreement with AWS in 2023 to jointly advance energy transition and technology initiatives ranging from fleet decarbonisation to digital upskilling. The new Tamil Nadu project represents a concrete delivery under that partnership and further strengthens Malaysia-India clean energy investment ties.

AWS is pursuing a goal of reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2040, ten years ahead of the Paris Agreement's target. The Tamil Nadu wind deal is consistent with India's push to expand renewable energy capacity to 500 GW by 2030, creating significant opportunities for corporate PPAs with technology and data centre companies. The 80 MW project, once operational in mid-2027, will contribute to Tamil Nadu's growing position as a key state for wind energy development in India.
