Bakelite Achieves EcoVadis Gold Medal, Enters Top 5% of 130,000 Rated Companies

Specialty resin manufacturer Bakelite has received a Gold Medal from EcoVadis, placing it in the top 5% of more than 130,000 companies assessed by the sustainability rating firm worldwide. The rating reflects operational improvements including solar panel installations at four European sites and advances in water reuse at US facilities.

Key operational actions contributing to the Gold Medal include the installation of solar panels at Bakelite's Barry, Lantaron and Kitee facilities in the UK, Spain and Finland respectively, the addition of a steam turbine at its Botlek plant in the Netherlands, water reuse advances at Eugene and Albany in Oregon, and a new chiller system at its Louisville, Kentucky facility to reduce water consumption. The company also expanded its public sustainability reporting, implemented the Responsible Care programme and achieved ISCC Plus certification across its operations.

EcoVadis assesses companies across 250 industries in 185 countries on sustainability performance covering environment, social, ethics and procurement. Its ratings are widely used in global supply chains, with buyers increasingly requiring suppliers to maintain minimum EcoVadis scores as part of procurement qualification. Bakelite's advancement into the Gold tier signals a level of sustainability management that is qualifying the company for preferred supplier status with customers operating rigorous supply chain sustainability standards.

Bakelite's recent acquisition of Sestec, a producer of bio-based adhesives for wood and composite materials, extends the company's sustainability portfolio into renewable material inputs. For chemical and specialty materials companies globally, including those in India serving international supply chains, EcoVadis Gold ratings represent a market access credential as European and North American multinationals tighten supplier sustainability requirements in line with CSRD and CSDDD obligations.
