Cepsa and Kira Ventures to build 15 Spanish biomethane plants by 2030

Cepsa partnered with Kira Ventures to develop up to 15 biomethane plants in Spain by 2030, targeting 4 TWh of biomethane annually and preventing 728,000 tonnes of CO2 yearly. The waste-to-energy model offers a circular-economy template relevant to India's agricultural and industrial decarbonization.

Cepsa partnered with Kira Ventures to establish up to 15 biomethane plants in Spain within the decade. By 2030, Cepsa aims to handle 4 TWh of biomethane annually to decarbonize industrial operations, replacing natural gas in its energy facilities and chemical plants. The shift is expected to recycle 10 million tonnes of waste each year and prevent 728,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, equivalent to planting 8.7 million trees. The first five plants in Castilla-La Mancha and Castilla y León will become operational between 2025 and 2026.

Cepsa's industrial and chemical operations are directly affected, with biomethane substituting natural gas and supplementing green hydrogen production and sustainable mobility. The agriculture and livestock sectors in rural and depopulated Spanish regions benefit, as plants use agricultural and livestock waste including manure and slurry. The initiative forms part of Cepsa's 'Positive Motion' 2030 strategy, targeting a 55% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions by 2030 versus 2019 and carbon neutrality by 2050.

Indian industrial firms, agri-businesses and waste-management companies should monitor biomethane from anaerobic digestion as a circular-economy pathway to decarbonize hard-to-abate operations using existing gas infrastructure. The model aligns with the EU's REPowerEU initiative and multiple SDGs including SDG 7, 8, 12 and 13.
