GRI launches XBRL-based Sustainability Taxonomy for machine-readable disclosures

The Global Reporting Initiative launched its Sustainability Taxonomy on June 19 2025, structuring GRI Standards in XBRL for machine-readable disclosures interoperable with ISSB and ESRS. As India advances BRSR digital reporting, the taxonomy offers a tool for standardised, comparable, cross-framework sustainability data.

On June 19 2025, the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) launched its Sustainability Taxonomy, a digital framework aligned with the GRI Standards and structured using XBRL (eXtensible Business Reporting Language). It encompasses the full suite of Universal, Sector, and Topic Standards, enabling organisations to file reports digitally either directly or through an online form, accommodating both large corporations and smaller entities. The structure supports faster data retrieval and interoperability with frameworks from the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) and the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), enabling comparability and cross-border regulatory compatibility.

The taxonomy affects ESG reporters, regulators, investors, and third-party service providers across jurisdictions facing rising demands around climate-risk disclosure. GRI will provide training through the GRI Academy and release validation and filing tools later in 2025 to ensure submitted reports remain consistent with GRI Standards. For third-party providers, GRI will roll out integration tools allowing the taxonomy to be embedded into existing reporting platforms. The dual direct-or-form submission approach supports entities with limited technical capacity, while structured data increases the trustworthiness and accessibility of GRI-aligned reports.

Indian companies preparing BRSR and other sustainability disclosures should monitor GRI's validation and filing tools due later in 2025 and assess the taxonomy's interoperability with ISSB and ESRS for cross-framework reporting. A public webinar was scheduled for June 23 2025 with registration via the GRI website. Reporters and ESG data users should evaluate how the XBRL structure improves comparability and data quality, and how integration tools can embed the taxonomy into existing platforms to meet evolving digital sustainability-regulation expectations with greater agility.
