IBM Makes Envizi Emissions API Generally Available for GHG Calculations

IBM has announced the general availability of the IBM Envizi Emissions API, enabling companies to embed GHG Protocol-aligned greenhouse gas emissions calculations directly into their existing software and workflows. The solution is part of IBM's broader Envizi ESG Suite, which the company acquired through its 2022 purchase of sustainability platform provider Envizi.

The Envizi Emissions API allows organisations to integrate standardised emissions calculations into their own products and systems without needing to build and maintain independent emissions factor libraries or calculation methodologies. The solution covers Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, and provides access to an emissions factor catalogue with global, regional, and industry-specific datasets. IBM said the launch reflects growing demand for real-time, scalable emissions insights, particularly as sustainability reporting requirements under frameworks such as CSRD and ISSB expand globally.

Building an in-house emissions calculation capability requires managing complex datasets, versioning methodologies, and ensuring consistency across use cases and geographies. IBM's API-based approach is designed to offload this burden while maintaining traceability and transparency needed for third-party reporting and stakeholder confidence. The solution also builds on capabilities previously added to the Envizi platform, including supply chain emissions data and CSRD reporting functions, reflecting the expanding scope of corporate ESG data requirements.

The general availability of the Envizi Emissions API follows an initial preview launch in the prior year and is intended to serve as infrastructure for organisations seeking to scale emissions tracking across their operations and partner ecosystems. As India-headquartered and globally operating companies face increasing pressure from international buyers and regulators to demonstrate credible GHG accounting, embedded API-driven emissions calculations are expected to become a standard component of enterprise sustainability technology stacks.
