Clean Energy Infrastructure and Grid Resilience initiatives expand renewable integration as ESG BROADCAST shares key takeaways.
The Andhra Pradesh Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (APSPDCL) has unveiled a strategic roadmap to position itself among India’s leading power distribution companies through an accelerated renewable energy transition. The initiative focuses on expanding solar capacity, strengthening grid resilience through energy storage systems, and improving consumer-oriented electricity services. The plan aligns with India’s broader clean energy goals and reflects the growing role of state-level utilities in driving sustainable power distribution.
The roadmap outlines a significant solar expansion program under the PM-KUSUM Scheme 2.0, which targets feeder-level solarisation across the distribution network. APSPDCL plans to add approximately 550 MW of solar capacity every year from the financial year 2026–27 through 2029–30. This phased rollout will deliver a cumulative solar capacity of around 2,200 MW within four years. By prioritizing distributed solar generation and feeder-level integration, the utility aims to improve supply reliability while reducing dependency on conventional power sources.
In parallel, APSPDCL has announced the development of a large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) with an initial capacity of 500 MW and 1,000 MWh. The battery energy storage system will help stabilize the grid as renewable energy penetration increases. Energy storage will also support peak demand management and ensure efficient integration of intermittent solar generation into the distribution network. As renewable capacity grows across the state, storage infrastructure will become essential to maintaining grid stability and operational efficiency.
The renewable energy strategy also includes a flagship initiative to develop the Kuppam constituency in Chittoor district as India’s first net-zero constituency. The project involves installing solar systems with a capacity of 4.36 MW for approximately 7,489 SC and ST consumers, alongside a 50 MW / 100 MWh battery energy storage system. In addition, rooftop solar installations totaling 39.75 MW will serve more than 48,000 residential consumers, creating a distributed clean energy ecosystem at the community level.
Alongside renewable power generation, APSPDCL is expanding sustainable mobility infrastructure. The utility plans to deploy electric vehicle charging stations at 162 locations in collaboration with Energy Efficiency Services Limited and the Bureau of Energy Efficiency. This effort supports the broader electrification of transport and strengthens the role of power distribution companies in enabling the clean energy transition.
The initiative has also attracted attention from leading energy experts. During a strategic interaction with energy policy specialist Ajay Mathur of IIT Delhi, officials discussed pathways for strengthening distributed renewable energy systems and improving operational efficiency within distribution utilities. The engagement reflects growing collaboration between policymakers, academia, and utilities to accelerate India’s clean energy transition.
Strategic significance lies in the ability of APSPDCL’s renewable energy expansion to reshape the operational model of power distribution companies. The large-scale solar deployment, combined with battery energy storage systems and EV infrastructure, strengthens grid flexibility and supports India’s long-term decarbonization goals. For utilities and energy markets, the roadmap demonstrates how distributed renewable energy and storage integration can enhance reliability, reduce emissions, and improve financial sustainability in the evolving power sector.
