Sustainable Mining and Biodiversity Conservation: ESG BROADCAST shares key takeaways.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) issued directives on December 24, 2025, imposing a complete ban on granting new mining leases across the entire Aravalli Range. This natural barrier spans from Gujarat to the National Capital Region, including Delhi. Authorities aim to curb illegal mining and preserve the ridge’s geological continuity. The Aravalli Range faces severe threats from unregulated extraction activities. These operations fragment the ecosystem and accelerate desertification. The new directives enforce uniform protection measures across all states in the region. MoEF&CC directs states to reject any fresh lease applications immediately.

Existing mining operations must adhere to strict environmental safeguards. States enforce compliance with Supreme Court orders and impose additional restrictions. Regulators prioritize rehabilitation of degraded sites. The focus shifts toward sustainable practices that minimize ecological damage. MoEF&CC tasked the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) with identifying additional prohibited zones. ICFRE conducts assessments based on ecological sensitivity, biodiversity hotspots, and landscape integrity. The council expands protected areas beyond current restrictions.

ICFRE also develops a comprehensive Management Plan for Sustainable Mining (MPSM) for the entire Aravalli region. This science-based plan evaluates cumulative environmental impacts and ecological carrying capacity. It designates conservation-critical zones and outlines restoration protocols. Stakeholders consult the plan once placed in the public domain Sustainable mining in the Aravalli Range gains urgency with these measures. Authorities integrate biodiversity conservation and aquifer recharge priorities. The directives support India’s broader environmental commitments.

Strategic significance lies in bolstering corporate compliance with environmental regulations for companies operating in or near the Aravalli region. Businesses in mining, infrastructure, and real estate sectors face heightened scrutiny on ecological impacts. This shift encourages adoption of sustainable mining practices, reduces legal risks, and enhances market positioning through stronger biodiversity conservation efforts. Investors increasingly favor entities demonstrating proactive environmental stewardship in sensitive ecosystems like the Aravalli Range.
