NTPC Renewable Energy to build 250 MW solar-BESS project on defence land

NTPC Renewable Energy Limited will develop a 250 MW solar power project integrated with a Battery Energy Storage System on vacant defence land at Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh. The project is a wholly owned subsidiary initiative of NTPC Green Energy Limited.

NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NTPC REL), a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC Green Energy Limited (NSE: NTPCGREEN | BSE: 544289), announced the proposed project on June 9, 2026. The solar-plus-storage facility will be located on vacant defence land at Sitapur in Uttar Pradesh, representing an innovative dual-use approach to land that is owned by the government but otherwise lies idle. Integrated Battery Energy Storage Systems allow solar power generated during daylight hours to be stored and dispatched when demand peaks or sunlight is unavailable.

The 250 MW scale, combined with BESS integration, positions this project as a dispatchable renewable energy asset — able to provide reliable power output rather than intermittent generation. This is particularly significant for grid operators managing the variability of solar generation, and aligns with India's growing emphasis on storage-backed renewable capacity in its national energy transition plans. Utilising defence land for clean energy infrastructure also addresses the challenge of land availability for large-scale renewables in a densely populated country.
