SBTi Publishes 2022 Progress Dashboard Covering 2,079 Organisations

The Science Based Targets initiative released its 2022 progress data dashboard, covering 2,079 organisations with science-based targets as of 31 December 2022. The dashboard allows stakeholders to examine self-reported progress against validated targets, drawing on CDP climate questionnaire data and desk research conducted between February and June 2023.

The dashboard covers 2,079 companies, financial institutions and SMEs that had validated targets on the SBTi platform by 31 December 2022. It uses a tiered reporting status system ranging from fully reported progress on all active targets to no comparable progress data found. Data was collected primarily from the 2022 CDP Climate Change Questionnaire, supplemented by desk research from publicly available sustainability reports, company websites and other corporate disclosures. SMEs using the streamlined route and net-zero targets are among the categories excluded from some portions of the analysis.

The dashboard highlights the uneven quality of corporate climate disclosure even among companies that have voluntarily adopted science-based targets. Companies that report outside of CDP, through their own sustainability reports or TCFD-aligned documents, may not be captured in the desk research period, leading to potential understatement of actual reporting rates. This issue is particularly relevant for companies in markets like India, where sustainability disclosure is less standardised than in Europe or North America.

The SBTi notes that target progress data in the dashboard should not be interpreted as confirmation of a company's achievement of its targets, only as a reflection of publicly available self-reported information. Error correction requests can be submitted to the SBTi through a dedicated form. Desk research for the 2022 dashboard was conducted in the February-to-June 2023 period, meaning disclosures published after 30 June 2023 are not reflected in the current dataset.
