Fluence India Commercial Head Builds Battery Storage Pipeline Across Indian Market

Rupam Raja serves as Chief Commercial Officer at Fluence India, leading market development for the Fluence joint venture with a focus on front-of-meter and behind-the-meter energy storage applications across transmission, distribution, commercial and industrial segments. He has been instrumental in developing some of the largest battery storage projects in India currently in operation or under development.

Before joining Fluence, Raja was a Partner with an environmental risk advisory firm where he worked with private equity investors, strategic buyers, law firms and investment advisors across sectors with material environmental footprints including power, chemicals and infrastructure. Prior to that he developed a clean energy investment pipeline in Indonesia and Malaysia with a total generation capacity exceeding 200 MW for an energy-focused private equity fund and for AES Corporation. His background spans project development, institutional investment, environmental risk and clean energy financing across Asian markets.

Fluence, a joint venture between Siemens and AES Corporation, is a global energy storage technology and services provider active in several major grid-scale battery deployments. India is among the most significant near-term growth markets for grid-scale battery energy storage systems as the country pursues its 2030 renewable energy capacity targets and requires fast-response backup resources to manage solar and wind variability. India's largest battery storage project — a 75 MW/150 MWh system in Karnataka — was commissioned in 2023, reflecting the accelerating pace of deployment.

Raja has published research reports and opinion pieces and has guest lectured at academic institutions in India and the United States. He has addressed industry associations and moderated panel discussions on environmental policy and business intersections. His expertise spans the entire transaction lifecycle for clean energy projects, from investment origination to deal execution and regulatory navigation — experience that is increasingly valuable as India scales BESS procurement through central and state public sector enterprise tender programmes that awarded 1,850 MW of storage projects between August 2022 and 2023.
