SBTi Opens Pilot Testing for Revised Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2

The Science Based Targets initiative launched a two-phase pilot test of its draft Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2 in June 2025, inviting companies of all sizes and regions to participate. The pilot survey ran from 16 June to 15 August 2025 and seeks to gather real-world evidence to ensure the updated standard is both scientifically sound and operationally practical.

SBTi's Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2 pilot comprises two phases. Phase One, an open survey available to companies across all sectors, gathered input to refine the draft and identify candidates for Phase Two. Phase Two will conduct hands-on testing with selected companies using real-world data to stress-test near-final standard requirements, identify implementation challenges, and validate key methodological assumptions. The current Corporate Net-Zero Standard has supported more than 1,850 companies in aligning with global climate goals since its introduction in 2021.

The revised standard is designed to accelerate emissions reductions from 2026 onwards, addressing barriers to scope 3 action, simplifying requirements for companies in emerging economies, and introducing mechanisms to recognise progress against targets. These changes are significant for Indian companies, many of which have struggled with scope 3 target-setting due to data availability constraints and complex supply chain dynamics. Streamlined requirements for developing-market businesses are expected to lower the barrier to entry for SBTi target adoption.

Pilot Phase Two will prioritise diversity across emissions profiles, geographies, sectors, and company sizes. SBTi Chief Technical Officer Alberto Carrillo Pineda noted that engagement in the first draft consultation was strong, and that pilot testing will provide the practical, first-hand insights needed to ensure the final standard drives impactful corporate climate action at scale.
