SKF Achieves Decarbonised Status at Nine Factories Including Two India Sites

Swedish engineering company SKF has achieved decarbonised status at six new factories across five countries, bringing its total to nine decarbonised facilities globally, including plants in Haridwar and Pune in India. The nine factories together account for almost 20% of SKF's baseline manufacturing emissions.

To qualify as decarbonised under SKF's standard, factories must demonstrate a minimum 95% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions compared to 2019 levels, a clear plan to address remaining emissions and continuous improvement in energy performance over time. The six newly decarbonised factories are located in Nilai (Malaysia), Puebla (Mexico), Haridwar and Pune (India), Massa (Italy) and Ladson (USA), joining previously decarbonised sites in Steyr (Austria), Tudela (Spain) and Gothenburg (Sweden). Key decarbonisation measures deployed across the new sites include switching to renewable electricity, phasing out fossil fuel-based heating, and investing in heat pumps and advanced chiller systems.

The inclusion of SKF's Haridwar and Pune factories among the newly decarbonised sites is significant for India's manufacturing sector, demonstrating that large industrial plants can achieve near-complete Scope 1 and 2 elimination within an existing operational footprint. SKF's commitment to decarbonise all operations by 2030 and reach net zero supply chain emissions by 2050 provides a clear corporate timeline that downstream customers and investors can reference. India's industrial sector is under growing pressure from international buyers and investors to demonstrate operational decarbonisation, and SKF's approach offers a replicable framework for other manufacturers operating in the country.

SKF Chief Sustainability Officer Susanne Larson said the achievement reflects the company's commitment to climate action and operational excellence and that investments in renewable energy, energy efficiency and innovative solutions are also increasing the company's own resilience by lowering energy demand. SKF's broader commitment to decarbonise its operations by 2030 means the company will need to replicate this approach across additional facilities over the coming years. The company said it is evaluating further sites for decarbonisation designation as it progresses towards its 2030 operational target.
