SKF Opens Free Patent Hub to Accelerate Sustainable Technology Development Globally

Swedish engineering company SKF has launched the Global Patent Bay, a platform allowing companies and individuals to share patents freely to accelerate development of sustainable technologies, ahead of COP30 in Brazil. SKF said the initiative is designed to remove intellectual property barriers such as licensing fees and complex agreements that currently slow the pace of climate solution deployment.

To mark the platform launch, SKF is releasing a patent for a high-performance bearing alloy originally developed for aviation, which allows engines to handle higher loads more efficiently and can deliver emissions reductions of up to 25%—equivalent to the annual output of approximately one million cars. The initiative follows a precedent set by historical examples of open intellectual property access accelerating broad adoption, including the Volvo three-point seatbelt patent and the rapid global development of COVID-19 vaccines.

Global patent filings have reached record levels, with the World Intellectual Property Organization recording 3.55 million applications in 2023, more than double the volume in 1995. This growth reflects the scale of innovation activity but also raises concerns about proprietary silos slowing technology transfer, particularly to developing economies. By making patents freely accessible, SKF is positioning the platform as a mechanism to foster cross-industry collaboration and help companies and public authorities meet UN and net zero targets faster.

The Patent Bay has particular relevance for emerging economy manufacturers and cleantech developers—including those in India—who often lack the resources to license technologies from large multinationals. Open access to industrial efficiency and low-emission technology patents could accelerate decarbonisation in energy-intensive sectors such as steel, cement and automotive manufacturing. Whether the platform attracts meaningful contributions from other large patent holders will determine its actual impact on technology deployment.
