Syngenta Partners Annam.AI to Deliver AI-Powered Crop Intelligence to Indian Farmers

Syngenta signed a memorandum of understanding to become a strategic partner in Annam.AI, India's first open-data national agricultural intelligence programme, contributing agronomic expertise for crop health, pest forecasting and heat stress models. The signing took place at an event in Nice attended by India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi and France's President Emmanuel Macron.

Annam.AI — the Alliance for Next-gen Nourishment through Agriculture Modernization — is backed by the Government of India through the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Agriculture, and is driven by IIT Ropar. The programme aims to build a nationwide agricultural intelligence backbone using open data, providing hyperlocal AI-powered advisories integrating crop intelligence, real-time microclimate data and multilingual tools. India has an estimated 150 million farming households, more than 80% of which are smallholders operating less than two hectares.

Indian farmers lose an estimated 30% of crops annually to pests, diseases and extreme weather, including erratic monsoons, droughts and El Nino-driven events. Syngenta, with operations in more than 90 countries and a long-standing presence in India, brings R&D capability and agronomy data to support the development of accurate predictive models within the programme. The partnership aligns with growing Indian and global recognition of the role precision agriculture and data-driven advisory services can play in climate adaptation for smallholder farmers.

Syngenta Group CEO Jeff Rowe said the Annam.AI programme presents a unique opportunity to contribute to a transformative digital foundation for Indian agriculture that will benefit more than 600 million people. The programme places India's government, leading engineering universities and global technology and agricultural companies — including Google as a technology partner — in a shared national infrastructure initiative. Successful deployment could provide a scalable model for climate-resilient agricultural data systems in other developing nations across South and Southeast Asia.
