UL Solutions Launches AI-Powered Product Carbon Footprint Calculation Software

Applied safety and science company UL Solutions has launched a new software tool enabling companies to calculate product carbon footprints and improve the quality of supplier data used in Scope 3 reporting. The tool is part of UL's ULTRUS UL 360 ESG and sustainability data management platform and uses AI to interpret bills of materials, formulations, and process data.

Key features of the new solution include AI-based interpretation of bills of materials and process data, calculation of 'cradle-to-gate' product carbon footprints aligned with the GHG Protocol, centralised views of supplier responses and data points, integration of product-level carbon data into reporting workflows, and identification of missing inputs and data completeness gaps. The software is designed to simplify data acquisition for procurement and sustainability teams while streamlining calculation and sharing for suppliers, delivering insights that strengthen confidence in product carbon footprint data.

The launch comes as companies face growing pressure to measure and disclose Scope 3 emissions under regulations including the EU's CSRD and California's SB 253. Many organisations still struggle to collect consistent, high-quality supplier emissions data at the product level, making product carbon footprint calculation a persistent source of reporting uncertainty and potential greenwashing risk. UL's AI-powered approach is designed to reduce the manual effort required to produce standardised, audit-ready product footprints across large supplier bases.

As product-level carbon footprint disclosure becomes increasingly expected by regulators, corporate buyers, and consumers, the ability to produce credible, standardised footprint data at scale is becoming a commercial differentiator for manufacturers.
